Prescriptions

Can you renew a repeat prescription online in South Africa?

A repeat prescription is not a rubber stamp. The doctor still needs to check that the medicine, dose and monitoring remain appropriate. Video can make that review easier when the condition is stable and the necessary information is available.

What to have ready

Bring the current prescription or clear photos of the medicine labels. Know the dose, how long you have taken it, any side effects and when you last had relevant blood tests or measurements. For blood pressure or diabetes treatment, recent home readings can be useful if they were taken correctly.

When a remote repeat may be reasonable

An established medicine for a stable condition may be suitable for online review. The doctor considers how long it has been used, whether symptoms have changed and whether monitoring is overdue.

When the doctor may say no

A new symptom, a medicine with strict monitoring requirements, a controlled drug request or a condition that has not been reviewed for a long time can require in-person care. The safe answer may be a short supply, a test first, a change in treatment or no prescription.

How hiDoc prices repeats

hiDoc lists repeat-prescription review as a separate appointment type. The current price and duration are displayed before booking. The fee covers the review, whether or not the doctor ultimately renews the medicine.
